The men ultra light down jacket by Uniqlo is a great way to start off.  This light weight jacket is warm and comfortable on those cold days and nights, has a high collar to protect the neck, and is so compact and thin that is can be worn as a inner or outer layer making it a completely versatile jacket. What college student doesn't need something like that! It even folds easily into an attached pouch allowing you to pack it into a book bag or purse instead folded in onto the back of a chair or where ever you can put it. The shell is 100% nylon, filling is 90% down and 10% feather, with the lining being 100% just like the shell of the jacket. This is best hand washed in cold water.
